The Value of Metal Roofing

The Value of Metal Roofing :  Weather’s New Fail Safe The Value of Metal Roofing

You’d have to be living under a rock to not have experienced some form of the extreme weather that is rampant across the United States.   From epic snow in the Sierras to intense heat in the desert southwest to the pounding ice and snow blizzards of the east coast, the value of metal roofing can be the perfect answer to keeping your home or business protected from the elements.

In areas that experience extreme temperature swings, much like our beloved Tahoe basin, more and more homeowners are choosing metal roofing to protect and extend the life of their roofs.

According to the Metal Roofing Alliance, a metal roof can withstand decades of abuse from high winds, excessive UV, heavy snow, large hail and catastrophic wildfires – the likes of which have dominated our news in recent years.   Architects, designers, builders and homeowners have continued to transition away from cheaper asphalt roofing styles and into the endless metal roofing options available.    With ever changing new building code requirements, which include California’s Title 24 and mandatory additional Class A fire compliances, it gives all a sense of relief to use the best material (metal) to meet these criteria.

The Value of Metal roofing has been the long preferred choice of homeowners in areas that see heavy snow loads.   It can shed snow quickly, preserving the structural integrity of the roof or it can be designed to hold the snow  for an added secret insulator.   And, it can eliminate ice damming at the eaves, so water from melt can’t back up and collect under the roof and cause physical damage and potentially leak into your home.

Metal Roofing Doesn’t Break Down

When you start talking lifespan/longevity, you can expect a metal roof to last 40-60 years and beyond.  Metal roofing manufacturers offer the best warranties in the industry – lifetime, and generally transferable.    Your metal roof will not decompose like an asphalt shingle roof – in fact it will retain its beauty for generations.

To put it in context, the average lifespan of an asphalt roof is 8-15 years in our harsh climate environment.   The lifespan will vary and could be shorter depending on the pitch of your roof and things like freeze/thaw, heavy snow loads and extreme winds.  Made of oil infused paper or fiberglass, asphalt begins to deteriorate as soon as it is exposed to any weather.   Another widely used roofing material – concrete tile – struggles with the freeze/thaw of our climate also as it is a porous material that becomes brittle over time and requires extensive maintenance.   Both styles insure you will re-roof again.

New Roofing to Renovating Your Existing Roof – A Metal Style For Every VisionThe Value of Metal Roof Styles

Our landscape is a alive with abundant diversity … from new home developments in the areas of Martis and Lahontan to the “fits like a glove – it’s been in the family for decades” homes of Tahoe Donner and the surrounding lake to everything in between.

Metal roofing  styles that can replicate the aesthetic attributes of shake, slate, tile and shingles are sought for their sustainability, recycled content, solar reflectance, environmental protection, strong curb appeal and unparalleled durability.   While the cost of a metal roof requires a greater initial investment, you begin to save money from day one.   Metal roofs reduce the energy needed to heat and cool a home thus saving you immediately on your utility bills and are just a part of the value of metal roofing.  There also currently exists a $500 Federal tax credit for the purchase of an Energy Star, energy efficient metal roof.

Not sure what a metal roof would look like on your home?   When re-roofing, it’s very helpful to have a metal style superimposed onto a photo of your house.   This helpful, extra service can ease the buying decision as well as solve those color arguments!

A Tahoe Story – Metal Roof Saves HomeThe Value of Metal Roofing-Roof Saves Cabin

Tasked with preserving the look of a 1950’s Tahoe cabin while decreasing weight, protecting the structure from elements and fire and finding the best “lasting” roofing product, True Green Roofing Solutions – the metal roofing authority for Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada and CATT associate – worked to educate the owners on the best wood shake replacement product.   After considering its many sustainable and aesthetic attributes, including the lifetime, transferable warranty, the owner chose a stone-coated steel “Canyon Shake” product from Gerard Roofing USA.   The deep-drawn steel panels are shaped and coated to replicate the look of wood shakes.

In the spring of 2011, five years after the installation of their new stone coated steel roof, the Tahoe basin experienced a period of heavy rains and excessive winds.   This combination caused a large tree to uproot and fall hitting square the ridge of the cabin.   The impact of the large tree was so violent that the impact snapped the tree in half sending part of the tree into the roof on the opposite side and then into the ground 18”!

To look at the house there was just minor damage apparent but the impact of the tree actually broke the main beam inside the house.   The metal roof held the home together and according to the contractor called to repair the internal structure, absorbed the majority of the brute force from the tree ultimately protecting it from a collapse and saving the owner greater damage costs!
